Athletic Trainers as Leaders in Sexual Violence Prevention

Athletic trainers are committed to using the best available evidence and practices to support the total development of the student-athlete.  Research has shown the damaging physical and mental health impacts of sexual harassment, assault, and abuse on youth and young adults. Beyond assessing for violence, reporting disclosures of sexual violence, and connecting survivors for resources – there’s a critical need for coaches, athletic directors, sport medicine professionals, and athletic trainers to take action toward preventing sexual violence before it happens.

At RALIANCE, we know and believe in the potential of sport to prevent sexual and domestic violence, both in the world of athletics and beyond. In 2019, we partnered with Michigan State University (MSU) to host an invitation-only listening session that brought together athletic trainers from across the B1G (Big Ten) Conference and selected Division II and Division III universities to discuss the role of athletic trainers in preventing sexual violence.

Our new report, Athletic Trainers as Leaders in Sexual Violence Prevention, draws on the perspectives of this group to outline the unique role of athletic trainers in the sport pipeline, opportunities athletic trainers identified to promote sexual violence prevention, and the supports needed to carry out this vision.

This report looks at:

• How the role of athletic trainers is unique in the sport pipeline
• Why athletic trainers are poised to promote sexual violence prevention
• What athletic trainers need to be leaders in preventing sexual violence
• The barriers athletic trainers face to realizing this role and priorities to overcome them

Since its release in 2018, Roll Red Roll has led to conversations about rape culture, the role sport plays in sexual violence, and how to create lasting social change.

RALIANCE in partnership with the Roll Red Roll social impact team, Open Door Abuse Awareness Prevention, and MenChallenging has created two toolkits to help coaches, athletic administrators, guidance counselors, and sexual violence prevention advocates discuss the film with their student athletes and spark social change. The first toolkit adapts conversations, discussion questions, and selected clips in thematic sections for college athletes, while the second toolkit focuses on high school athletes.

Men As Peacemakers

A 6-step guide to saftey & gender equity in sports.

This toolkit includes resources for Executive Directors, Club Presidents, Coaching Directors or other leaders of community athletic organizations. The resources included will teach your coaches to promote safety, respect, and gender equity with all players. This guide is meant to provide examples and a framework for the development of your organization’s policies and procedures. Our previous work with the Minnesota State High School League, Arrowhead Youth Soccer Association, Winona Youth Soccer Association, and other sports organizations, has taught us that every organization is unique. #SafeOutside

From the #SafeOutside website: "#SafeOutside is an independent grassroots initiative designed to combat sexual harassment and sexual assault (SHSA). Organizations from climbing and outdoor communities around the world have joined forces to collect data, drive conversation, share best practices, provide press coverage and address the issues."

As a result of data collection and collaboration across sectors, #SafeOutside created a report on sexual harassment and sexual assault in climbing communities, and a toolkit for addressing sexual harassment and sexual assault in outdoor recreation and other other industries.  Also available on the site media examples for raising awareness about sexual harassment and sexual assault in climbing and outdoor recreation communities.

Adaptive Sports Abuse Prevention (ASAP) Train-the-Trainer Conference

IMPACT Boston

IMPACT Bosten hosts a free train-the-trainer conference for the Adaptive Sports Abuse Prevention (ASAP) curriculum. ASAP is one of the few curricula designed specifically for coaches, trainers, volunteers and leaders of programs that work with athletes with disabilities. This conference will equip participants to teach the 5-session curriculum within their organizations. The event is made possible by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation and is held in collaboration with the U.S. Center for SafeSport.

ASAP is a dynamic, interactive program in which participants learn to:

• Recognize abuse and sexual misconduct
• Interrupt unsafe or inappropriate interactions that could escalate to abuse
• Think critically and productively about safe touch and healthy relationships
• Report sexual abuse and collaborate with a local rape crisis center

The training conference takes place March 29 and 30, 2022 in Colorado Springs.

Athlete Ally program

Athlete Ally

Athlete Ally is a 501c-3 nonprofit organization that provides public awareness campaigns, educational programming and tools and resources to foster inclusive sports communities. We mobilize Ambassadors in collegiate, professional and Olympic sports who work to foster “allyship” in their athletic environments. The programs include Ambassadors from over 80 colleges and over 100 professional athletes.

Athletes As Leaders

Harborview Center for Sexual Assault & Traumatic Stress

Athletes As Leaders is a program for high school athletes on girls’ sports teams.  The program aims to empower female-identified youth to take an active role in promoting healthy relationships and ending sexual violence. It is based on research and best practices in the field of sexual assault prevention. 

Athletes are encouraged to be leaders in changing peer norms and school climate to a culture of safety and respect.  Athletes As Leaders is intended to be used as
a complement to programs with intentional efforts to engage men and boys in prevention.

Character Initiative Grant (InSideOut Program)

InSideOut Initiative, Arlington School District, and Dallas Cowboys (NFL)

InSideOut Initiative began in January 2016 with the the Dallas Cowboys in coordination with the NFL Foundation on a character education program that has been endorsed by the UIL and the Texas High School Coaches Association. The Cowboys have helped host three InSideOut meetings with key superintendents and athletic decision-makers across the start to help bring awareness to this initiative.

Subsequently, the Arlington ISD was awarded nearly $30,000 in grants from the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Arlington Youth Foundation to support a character training initiative for 375 AISD secondary coaches with Joe Ehrmann, former NFL Colts player and co-founder of the InSideOut Initiative and Jody Redman, InSideOut Initiative co-founder and Minnesota State High School League associate director.

Sports and physical activity help kids build strong bodies and brains. Interactions with trained coaches help them build the skills they need for life. All of our trainings focus on creating capable, thoughtful youth development practitioners who use sport as the vehicle through which they build strong relationships with youth. Coaching Boys Into Men Program Evaluation

Futures Without Violence

In 2012, Coaching Boys Into Men underwent a rigorous three year evaluation in Sacramento, California funded by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The study found that athletes who participated in the program were significantly more likely to intervene when witnessing abusive or disrespectful behaviors among their peers, and were also more likely to report less abuse perpetration.

Coaching Boys into Men Video Series

Futures Without Violence & FISA Foundation

This site provides video resources to supplement the Coaching Boys Into Men dating violence prevention program for high school athletic coaches to use with their male athletes. If you have the curricula, you can proceed to Getting Started videos to help you prepare to deliver CBIM, or use the menu to skip to any of the topics in the card series. FISA Foundation, in partnership with The Heinz Endowments and the United Way of Allegheny County developed Southwest PA Says No More to showcase the important prevention-focused work happening here, and to make it easier for individuals and organizations to take action to stop gender-based violence. Coaching For Change

Men As Peacemakers

Coaching for Change is an interactive on-line training that provides coaches on the ground examples of how to recognize and address issues of sexual harassment, sexual abuse, teen dating violence, and domestic violence.  The training focuses on the primary prevention of these behaviors by introducing skills and strategies which create a team culture of gender equity and respect. This is a mandated training by the Minnesota State High School League for MN state high school coaches’ licensure.
