The 8th Linda Saltzman New Investigator Award recognizes an outstanding new investigator with 2-10 years of experience working in the field of gender-based violence. RALIANCE, Futures Without Violence, the CDC Foundation, and a committee of experts will select one outstanding individual to receive the Linda Saltzman New Investigator Award for 2025. The recipient will receive passage to the 2025 Futures Without Violence Conference on Health in San Francisco, CA, including airfare, hotel, waived conference registration (September 9-11th, 2025), and a small stipend. Additionally, they will be guaranteed a presentation slot during the conference. The awardee will be recognized during the conference by representatives of Futures Without Violence, RALIANCE, and the CDC Foundation.

Nominations are accepted from professionals in the field . They will be selected based on the quality of their research and its implications for the field; commitment to underserved communities; use of equity-centered methodology; and engagement with health providers and advocates. We are interested in research candidates from various professions including, but not limited to doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, public health professionals, and advocates.

This award is named for Dr. Linda Saltzman, Senior Scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Division of Violence Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, from 1984 until she died in 2005. Dr. Saltzman connected research to policy and science to advocacy in ways that broke new ground, challenging the research community to explore violence and helping advocates base their work on science.

Dr. Saltzman initiated numerous studies that built understanding about the causes and consequences of domestic and sexual violence. Much of her work focused on public health surveillance of violence against women, and violence as it relates to pregnancy and other reproductive health issues. She helped develop and test uniform definitions for intimate partner and sexual violence, which have made data collection more effective. She became one of the CDC’s top experts on violence, and one of the violence prevention movement’s most trusted allies. A highly regarded expert, Dr. Saltzman authored and co-authored several groundbreaking studies including “Intimate Partner Violence Surveillance: Uniform Definitions and Recommended Data Elements.”

Nominations are due February 21, 2025.  The nomination form and more information can be found here.
