Kings Over Violence Awareness Campaign

LA Kings & Peace Over Violence

Kings and Peace Over Violence (POV) will create a promotional campaign entitled “Kings Over Violence” in an effort to create a platform to significantly increase awareness against violence. Within this campaign, the Kings will seek to support the goals of POV, which is dedicated to building healthy relationships, families and communities free from sexual, domestic and interpersonal violence.

KU Student-Athlete Primary SV/DV Prevention Program

University of Kansas - Kansas Athletics Inc & Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Center (SAPEC)

Kansas Athletics Inc. and the Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Center (SAPEC) at the University of Kansas have established a comprehensive primary prevention program for student-athletes.  Through collaboration, mutual respect, and a shared goal of gender based violence prevention,  KU has established a truly unique endeavor.  This training program includes multiple annual in-person training requirements for all KU Athletics Inc. staff and coaches on gender based violence recognition and response.  In addition to staff and coaches, it also provides multiple required evidence based in-person prevention trainings for all student-athletes.  Alternative trauma-informed sessions for student-athletes who have been impacted by gender based violence are facilitated by confidential campus partners.  Additional specialized trainings are provided as requested by individual teams.  The partnership between Kansas Athletics Inc. and SAPEC has not only produced significant positive assessment outcomes; but also, a new shared Graduate Assistant who specializes in Prevention Education for Student-Athletes.  The evolving partnership has led to the implementation of a four part seminar for academic credit on gender based violence prevention for student-athletes.  This new seminar will launch in the Fall of 2018 and provides progressive education that grows with the student-athlete each year during their time at the institution.  The seminar will replace foundational team trainings in an effort honor the time constrains that student-athletes face during their academic careers.

Local YWCA & NFL Team Partnership

Cincinnati Bengal & YWCA of Greater Cincinnati

Cincinnati Bengals  partnered with the YWCA of Greater Cincinnati to help reduce incidents of domestic violence.  Bengals provided support for the YWCA to purchase Domestic Violence Inventory assessments that they were unable to afford due to limited funding.  These DVIs were administered to individuals who do harm to their significant others (e.g., intimate partner violence) to help determine their level of risk for repeat behaviors.

NCAA Sexual Violence Prevention Toolkit

NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association)

The NCAA Sexual Assault Task Force convened in 2015 to provide clear direction on a curriculum that will help athletics departments engage in education, collaboration and compliance surrounding sexual violence issues. This tool kit, initiated by the task force, builds on critical elements outlined in the fall 2014 NCAA publication “Addressing Sexual Assault and Interpersonal Violence: Athletics’ Role in Support of Healthy and Safe Campuses.” The toolkit focuses on 5 areas of commitment with checklists and implementation tools:

NO MORE

NO MORE aims to raise public awareness and engagement around ending domestic violence and sexual assault. Launched in March 2013 by a coalition of leading advocacy groups, service providers, the U.S. Department of Justice, and major corporations, NO MORE is supported by hundreds of national and local groups and by thousands of individuals, organizations, universities, and communities who are using its signature blue symbol to increase visibility for domestic violence and sexual assault.

One Love Foundation

One Love Foundation

It is the goal of the One Love Foundation to honor Yeardley Love, a unversity-level Lacrosse player beaten to death by her ex-boyfriend, by bringing an end to Relationship Violence by educating, empowering and activating campus communities in a movement for change. We know that, given the chance, Yeardley certainly would have wanted to help.

Organizing to End Violence

Old Dominion University & Greet Dot

ODU Women's Center raised some "red flags" as part of the annual Red Flag Campaign, to raise awareness about the prevalence of dating violence on university campuses.

The campaign is a statewide initiative to shed light on relationship violence and includes a series of eight posters that illustrate "red flags" that might appear in a relationship where dating violence is occurring. The posters depict students of different genders, ethnicities and sexual orientations, and also focus on different aspects of dating violence, including emotional abuse, coercion, excessive jealousy, isolation, sexual assault and victim-blaming. The PSA was created as part of this campaign.

Partner in Prevention Training

Darkness to Light

Organizations that apply and are approved are recognized as a Darkness to Light Partner in Prevention for a period of one year. The organization is given a dated 
Partner in Prevention   emblem to display at their facility, place on their website, and use on printed materials. The emblem is a sign to the community that the organization has made a commitment to prevention and has put measures in place to prevent child sexual abuse in their organization and in their community.

Positive Coaching Alliance Workshops

Positive Coaching Alliance

Typically, an individual school or youth sports organization hosts a Leadership workshop for its directors, a separate Double-Goal Coach workshop for all its coaches, and a separate Second-Goal Parent workshop. A Triple-Impact Competitor workshop is available for teenage athletes in the school or organization. PCA also offers Partnerships that include workshops for school districts, conferences, park-and-recreation organizations, leagues, and youth sports consortiums in all 50 states and several other nations. Each workshop takes anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours and is led by a PCA Trainer with deep athletic and coaching experience (usually at least three years at the high school level or above). The Trainer explains PCA's three key principles -- Redefining "Winning" as Mastery of Sport, Filling Emotional Tanks and Honoring the Game -- and leads attendees through a series of interactive exercises based on common youth sports scenarios. The result is that the group of leaders, coaches, parents or athletes begins to explore different approaches for success and establishes a common vocabulary for use in providing athletes a positive, character-building youth sports environment.

Refuse to Abuse

Seattle Mariners (MLB) & Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence

The basics

Refuse To Abuse® is a statewide community education program that helps prevent domestic violence. The program is sponsored by the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Seattle Mariners, with significant assistance from the advertising firm Craters of the Moon. Television, radio, and print public service announcements have been produced featuring prominent Mariners players and managers, including Felix Hernandez, Jamie Moyer, Raul Ibañez, and Kyle Seager. An annual Refuse To Abuse® 5K at Safeco Field draws Mariners fans, runners, walkers, and community supporters, giving a broad audience the chance to join the Mariners and “refuse to abuse.”

Purpose

Refuse To Abuse® aims to raise awareness and help prevent domestic violence. High profile athletes and recognized community leaders are speaking out against domestic violence and asking for a commitment from others in the community to join them.

Why the Mariners are involved

Few professional teams have chosen to take such a public stand against domestic violence. For the past 21 years the Seattle Mariners have done more than just talk about helping raise awareness about this issue, they have stood firm in their leadership role. Having credible, professional male athletes speak out on this issue helps send a powerful message to young people.

About the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence (WSCADV)

WSCADV is a non-profit network of nearly 70 community domestic violence programs. We improve how communities respond to domestic violence and work to create a social intolerance for abuse.

Run Through Bullying Campaign

Arizona Cardinals & Stomp Out Bullying

Partnership includes engagement in My Cause, My Cleats where Cardinals running back David Johnson’s cleats told the story of his being bullied as a child and his work with STOMP OUT Bullying to help other kids going through the same experience. Running Back David Johnson also met with 80 students from Phoenix and Glendale after practice to begin his “Run Thru Bullying” campaign. Johnson, who told the kids his own story of being bullied, will spend the next six-to-eight weeks raising awareness for the issue.

Fisa Foundation

FISA Foundation, in partnership with The Heinz Endowments and the United Way of Allegheny County developed Southwest PA Says No More to showcase the important prevention-focused work happening here, and to make it easier for individuals and organizations to take action to stop gender-based violence. One area of focus is Sport and Athletics.

Teen Workshop with Lady Texans

Houston Texans (NFL) & Houston Area Women's Center

Lady Texans hosted an afternoon event at the Texans teen room with our Violence Prevention Educators Maria Espana and Sissel Carlson from the Houston Area Women's Shelter in 2017. The Lady Texans spend the afternoon in an interactive workshop with the teens talking about healthy versus unhealthy relationships. In addition to donating gift cards and inspirational journals for the teens, the Lady Texans generously gave $2,500 to the Houston Area Women's Center.
