"The Sport Situational Prevention Approach (SSPA) is a new, three-year, grant-funded project in collaboration with leading authority Dr. Keith Kaufman. The SSPA aims to:

1. Help keep athletes safe;
2. Support and strengthen prevention efforts in sports;
3. Create safety tools tailored for use by the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee and elite youth sports organizations;
4. Create an early warning system to identify and address safety risks when they are in their earliest stages."

Darkness to Light has a long-standing commitment to assessing the effectiveness of the Stewards of Children® program. There have been four studies that have evaluated the training program. All studies have demonstrated similar positive results. Training participants have consistently demonstrated increased knowledge, improved attitudes and, most importantly, positive change in child-protective behaviors.

Up2Us Program Evaluation Outcomes

Up2Us

The Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI) conducted an external evaluation of the efficacy of the Up2Us Sports program in New Orleans during the 2015-2016 program year. The evaluation measured the extent to which Up2Us Sports contributes to improved fitness and the development of positive attributes for youth. Data was collected from youth participants in the Up2Us Sports program and a comparison group of youth not involved in Up2Us Sports programming. LPHI found that youth who work with Up2Us Sports coaches improve fitness levels and improve in some high impact attributes when compared with youth not working with Up2Us Sports coaches. LPHI also found that higher Up2Us Sports coach skills resulted in more positive changes for youth.

US Center for SafeSport

Athletes will perform better, soar higher, and get more from sport if they feel safe. SafeSport seeks to create a healthy, supportive environment for all participants. Through education, resources, and training, we help members of the sport community recognize, reduce, and respond to misconduct in sport. 

The Center has two offices, each with distinct roles in helping to create a safe, strengthening environment for athletes.

Education & Outreach Office

• Administers national programming to promote respect and prevent abuse
• Raises awareness of issues
• Provides educational materials and resources

Response & Resolution Office

• Investigates and resolves alleged violations of the SafeSport Code for the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement
• Uses neutral and independent investigators and arbitrators in its processes
• Gathers and analyzes data that is used to improve awareness and prevention programs

No YSO wants to have youth sexual abuse concerns, which is why leaders need explicit policies and procedures to help with prevention.

The recommended policies and procedures outlined in the PDF found below are brought to you by SureID™, a PCA trusted resource. SureID is a secure Identity-as-a-Service solution that helps organizations manage third-party risk. The four steps outlined include a coach recruitment plan, an annual abuse prevention orientation, a list of prohibited behaviors, and a system for reporting suspected child sexual abuse.
