Preventing Sexual Violence at 2020 Public Health Conference
“Creating the Healthiest Nation: Preventing Violence” was the theme at the 2020 Virtual American Public Health Association Annual Meeting. Over the last several years, RALIANCE’s work to prevent sexual violence through sport has been highlighted at this conference. This year, RALIANCE’s David Lee presented on “Preventing sexual violence through sport: Roadmap for comprehensive prevention” sharing resources from RALIANCE’s Sport + Prevention Center.
He also moderated a panel titled “”Engaging Sport for Prevention of Gender-Based Violence: Findings from Theory, Epidemiologic Analysis, and Practice” that featured researchers who have participated in RALIANCE Think Tanks that have generated reports such as Power of Sport: Advancements and Recommendations for Sexual Violence Prevention in Sport.
There were other sessions on the power of sport to prevent sexual violence including Valencia Peterson (as known as Coach V) speaking about the evidence based prevention program “Coaching Boys into Men” and NCAA’s Jessica Wagner speaking about sports as a platform to prevent sexual violence on college campuses.
RALIANCE joins public health professionals for a monthly meeting on Sport and Recreation to explore research and strategies to promote athlete well-being which includes sexual violence prevention.
